Munir Hussain was born in 1959 into a well-known Bangladeshi family—his mother, Dr. Meherunnessa, was a respected physician. In 1989, at just 30 years old, he married Sharmin Rima, the daughter of journalist Nizamuddin Ahmed, who had been killed during Bangladesh’s Liberation War. Despite t.heir young marriage, Munir was also having a long-term affair with Hosne Ara Khuku, a married middle-aged woman.

murder story

On the night of 8–9 April 1989, Munir picked up his wife, Sharmin, along the Chittagong-Dhaka highway. During the drive, he stabbed her—killing her—and dumped her body near Mijmizi village in Narayanganj District. He was arrested the following day, bringing an abrupt end to the crime spree.

The crime made front-page news. The trial unfolded rapidly and pitted two prominent families in a dramatic clash. On 21 May 1990, Munir and Khuku were both sentenced to death under Bangladesh’s law. However, in July 1992, the appellate court cleared Khuku of charges and dropped her death sentence, while Munir’s death sentence was upheld through successive appeals.

On 27 July 1993, Munir Hussain was executed by hanging.
