— Michiah Shobek
Michiah Shobek was born in 1954. His early life was spent in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He started out as an ordinary young man, but details about his childhood and family background are not widely documented.
As a young adult, he worked as a handyman. He later moved to Nassau, The Bahamas, where he changed his name from James Michael Shoffner.
At the age of 22, his life took a dark turn, which would lead him into the history books for reasons no one could have predicted. His decisions and actions during this period set the stage for the rest of his life.
Michiah Shobek, previously known as James Michael Shoffner, was a handyman in Nassau, The Bahamas. Between December 5, 1973, and January 26, 1974, he committed a series of murders that shocked the community. Shobek's victims included Irwin Borstein, a 44-year-old New York accountant; Paul Howell, a 50-year-old attorney from Massillon, Ohio; and Katie Smith, a 17-year-old from Detroit.
All three murders involved stabbing with a knife. During the police investigation, Shobek claimed that his victims were "angels of Lucifer." He stated that he believed he was following orders from God to kill them. Shobek was arrested and put on trial for the murders.
On October 18, 1976, he was found guilty in the murder of Irwin Borstein. This was a significant case, as Shobek became the first American to be sentenced to death in Nassau in fifteen years. The next day, on October 19, 1976, he was executed by hanging. After his execution, he was buried in a pauper's grave.
