— Michael Shane Worthington
Michael Shane Worthington was born on January 30, 1971. He had a troubled childhood marked by significant family issues. His father was a drug user and introduced him to stealing at a young age. Worthington's mother was a crack addict and later turned to prostitution. Because of these challenging family dynamics, Worthington grew up in a dysfunctional environment.
By the time he was a teenager, Worthington was using drugs and alcohol frequently. He faced a series of legal troubles, accumulating numerous arrests for various offenses, including burglary. His early life involved chaos and conflict, often leading to involvement with the law.
As a young adult, Worthington continued to struggle with substance abuse. His behavior led to multiple convictions for crimes. Despite these challenges, he had short periods when he tried to improve his situation, but ultimately, his life was troubled by addiction and crime.
These early life experiences would later become significant factors in the narrative of his life. His background reflects a cycle of abuse and neglect that influenced his actions as an adult.
On September 30, 1995, Michael Shane Worthington murdered his neighbor, Melinda Griffin, in St. Charles County, Missouri. That night, after spending time with a friend, Worthington returned to his condominium. He noticed that the window of Griffin's condo was open. Using a razor blade, he cut through the screen and entered her home.
Once inside, he encountered Griffin in her bedroom. To silence her screams, Worthington choked her until she lost consciousness. He then raped her. When she regained consciousness and fought back, he strangled her to death. After committing the murder, Worthington stole her jewelry, car keys, and credit cards, using them to buy drugs.
The following morning, Worthington was stopped by police while driving Griffin's car. Officers found items belonging to her in the vehicle, including her jewelry. During the encounter, Worthington threatened to commit suicide, prompting police to take him into custody.
DNA evidence collected from Griffin's body also linked Worthington to the crime. He confessed to the murder but claimed he could not remember the details due to his intoxication from drugs and alcohol at the time of the crime.
On January 4, 1999, Worthington was sentenced to death. He was executed by lethal injection on August 6, 2014, in Missouri. His last meal consisted of a cheeseburger, French fries, a rib-eye steak, and onion rings. Before his execution, Worthington did not express any remorse for his actions. He made a final statement where he reflected on his situation and expressed his thoughts about justice and peace.
