1991 - 1992Michael Sams was born on August 11, 1941, in the United Kingdom. He grew up in a working-class family. There is limited information about his early childhood and family life. As a young man, he was known to be a competitive middle-distance runner. Unfortunately, he later contracted a disease that caused him to lose a leg.
Overall, Michael Sams had a simple upbringing but faced health challenges and some legal issues as he grew older. His early life is marked by a lack of specific details, but the transition from a young athlete to a criminal is notable in his story.
On July 9, 1991, Michael Sams kidnapped Julie Dart, an 18-year-old girl who was working as a prostitute in Leeds, West Yorkshire. She went missing around this time. Days later, on July 12, Julie’s boyfriend received a strange letter from her. The letter said she had been kidnapped, and a ransom was demanded. The police got involved. Unfortunately, on July 19, Julie Dart's body was found in a field in Lincolnshire. She had been struck on the head and strangled.
Later, on January 22, 1992, Sams abducted Stephanie Slater, who worked as an estate agent in Birmingham. She disappeared while showing a house to a man who claimed to be interested in buying it. Over the next week, Stephanie was kept in captivity, locked inside a wheelie bin and raped. Sams demanded a ransom of £175,000, which the police agreed to. They arranged for the money to be delivered by one of Stephanie’s coworkers.
The plan to capture Sams, however, did not go as expected. He managed to escape after receiving the ransom but returned Stephanie to her home that same night. Shortly after her release, police worked to find her kidnapper. They played a recording of his voice on a television show called Crimewatch UK, which led to a tip about Michael Sams. He was arrested at his workshop in Newark, Nottinghamshire, where both Julie Dart and Stephanie Slater had been held.
In 1993, Sams was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Julie Dart and the kidnapping of Stephanie Slater. He received four life sentences in total. He was already serving time when he attacked a probation officer in prison, which added eight more years to his sentence.
