“Anybody who wants to see me, my other partner and my kids — they can come and stop with me for a week and I guarantee after a week they’ll be amazed, especially at the way my children behave. My children are brought up properly.”

Bio

Michael "Mick" Philpott was born in 1956 in England. He grew up in a troubled environment that impacted his adult life. From a young age, Philpott showed aggressive behavior. He joined the army but frequently went absent without leave. In 1978, at the age of 21, he attempted to murder his girlfriend, Kim Hill. This incident was significant as it marked the beginning of his criminal history. For this crime, he was jailed for seven years but was released after serving just over three years.

After his release, Philpott married Pamela Lomax in 1986. They had three children together, but their relationship was marked by his controlling behavior. In the early 1990s, he became involved with a younger girl named Heather Kehoe. She moved in with him when she was just 16. Their relationship was turbulent, with Philpott allegedly becoming violent when he wanted more children.

In the 2000s, Philpott met Mairead Duffy, then a 19-year-old single mother. They married in 2003, shortly after she moved in with him. Philpott also met Lisa Willis, a 16-year-old orphan, during this time. He invited her to live with them, leading to an unconventional family dynamic that included multiple partners and children from various relationships.

Philpott became known in the media after he appeared on The Jeremy Kyle Show in 2007, where he defended his lifestyle supported by state benefits. He drew public criticism for requesting a larger house to accommodate his family, which included his wife, mistress, and their children. By this time, he had fathered a total of 17 children by different women.

Murder Story

On May 11, 2012, a deadly fire broke out in the Philpott family's home at 18 Victory Road in Allenton, Derby, England. The fire started around 4 a.m. while six children were sleeping upstairs. Tragically, five children died in the fire: Jade (10), John (9), Jack (7), Jesse (6), and Jayden (5). Their older half-brother, Duwayne (13), died in the hospital two days later.

Duwayne, 13, Jade Philpott, 10, and her brothers John,9, Jack, 8, Jayden, 5 and Jesse, 6.

The circumstances surrounding the fire raised immediate suspicion. Initial investigations found evidence that the fire had been started deliberately using petrol. Reports indicated that petrol was discovered in the letterbox of the house. As a result, the police launched a murder investigation.

Following the fire, Philpott, his wife Mairead, and their friend Paul Mosley were arrested. Their behavior after the fire was concerning to witnesses, who noted that Philpott seemed to enjoy the attention rather than expressing profound grief over the loss of his children.

The police bugged the hotel room where Philpott and Mairead were staying after the fire. Evidence emerged from these recordings that showed the couple had prior knowledge about the fire. They were heard discussing their stories about what had happened, and pressure had been applied to maintain a consistent narrative.

On May 30, 2012, both Mick and Mairead Philpott were formally charged with murder. The charges were later reduced to manslaughter, with the authorities deciding they had not intended to kill their children.

After an eight-week trial, consequences for their actions were delivered. On April 2, 2013, Mick and Mairead Philpott, along with Paul Mosley, were found guilty of manslaughter. The trial exposed their manipulative lives entwined with deceit and control, ultimately leading to their tragic consequences. Mick Philpott was sentenced to life imprisonment, with a minimum term of 15 years, while Mairead and Mosley received lesser sentences.
