Bio

Michael Passaro was born on July 26, 1962, on Long Island, New York. He was the second of five children in his family and was named after a brother who had passed away two years prior. Growing up, Michael struggled with self-esteem and was often seen as the "problem" child in the family. He had difficulty with school and was a follower rather than a leader. He was not physically confrontational, relying on his older sister to defend him from bullies.

After finishing high school, Michael joined the Navy. However, his service did not provide him the confidence he needed. He eventually faced legal issues while serving, which led to him receiving a less than honorable discharge. Following his time in the Navy, Michael took on various jobs, including roles as a cab driver, electrician, and paramedic, while also battling issues with drugs and alcohol.

In the late 1980s, tragedy struck Michael's life when his first wife, Donna, died in an accident. She had gone to help victims of a car crash but was electrocuted when a wire fell on her. Michael was devastated by her death and struggled to cope, leading him into a downward spiral of substance abuse.

He eventually moved to South Carolina to live with his parents. There, he began to rebuild his life, graduated from community college, and started working at a kidney dialysis center. He met his second wife, Karen, at work, and they married in 1996. They welcomed a daughter named Maggie in 1996. However, Michael's marriage had difficulties, leading to a separation in 1998.

As his marriage fell apart, Michael faced a custody dispute over their daughter, which contributed to his emotional decline. This unrest in his personal life set the stage for the tragedy that would ultimately define his legacy.

Murder Story

On November 23, 1998, Michael Passaro set fire to a family minivan outside his estranged wife's condominium in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Inside the van was his two-year-old daughter, Maggie, strapped in her car seat. Passaro doused the interior of the van with gasoline and ignited it, intending to also take his own life in the blaze. However, he managed to escape the van just before it exploded.

When firefighters arrived at the scene, they asked Passaro if anyone was inside the van. He refused to answer, leaving them unaware of the child's presence. After the fire was put out, Maggie's body was discovered inside. Investigators later found a singed suicide note in the van, indicating that Passaro had intended to kill both himself and his daughter as an act of revenge against his estranged wife.

Following the tragedy, Passaro was arrested on the same day. He was charged with murder and first-degree arson. During his court proceedings, he pled guilty to the charges, despite his attorney's advice against it. In his plea, he expressed a desire for the death penalty, which he believed would reunite him with his first wife and daughter in heaven.

On September 13, 2002, Michael Passaro was executed by lethal injection in South Carolina. He was 40 years old at the time of his execution. Passaro's case drew attention due to the circumstances surrounding the crime, the suicide note he left behind, and his refusal to appeal his sentence.
