1995Michael Lee Wilson was born on February 18, 1975, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He had a challenging upbringing marked by various difficulties. His father struggled with substance abuse, primarily crack cocaine, and was often absent from the family. This created a complicated family dynamic, as his mother, Patricia Taylor, worked hard to provide a loving and stable environment. Despite their struggles, she tried to instill positive values in Wilson and maintained a close relationship with him.
During his childhood, Wilson showed promise in school and was described by teachers and acquaintances as polite and respectful. However, he was also exposed to significant negative influences. He grew up in a neighborhood that had a lot of gang activity, which eventually affected his life choices. Despite this, Wilson had periods of stability; for instance, he spent time with his aunt in North Carolina, away from the turbulence of his home life, where he thrived in a different environment.
Tragically, throughout his teenage years, Wilson encountered many traumatic experiences, including being shot in a drive-by shooting and witnessing violence that stemmed from gang rivalries. These incidents would linger in his mind and contributed to the instability in his life. At the age of 14, he was deeply affected by the death of a Sunday school teacher who had been a significant support figure in his life, adding more emotional turmoil to his already complicated childhood.
By the time he was a young adult, Wilson's life continued to take a troubling turn. He was involved in criminal activities and had a history of arrests. He found a job at a convenience store, where he worked alongside Richard Yost, soon to be his victim. Wilson's early life experiences shaped him into an individual who struggled with his identity and morality amid the chaos surrounding him.
Michael Lee Wilson was involved in a brutal crime that took place at a QuikTrip convenience store in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in the early hours of February 26, 1995. Wilson, along with three accomplices, carefully planned the robbery for weeks. They loitered around the store before attacking Richard Kevin Yost, the clerk on duty, when the store was nearly empty.
The men dragged Yost to the back room of the store, where they restrained him with handcuffs and began to beat him. They used an aluminum baseball bat and struck him multiple times, causing severe injuries. While this attack was happening, Wilson posed as Yost. He put on Yost's uniform, worked at the cash register, and helped other customers, all while his accomplices continued to assault Yost.
Once they had taken money and attempted to steal a safe, they fled the scene. The violent nature of the crime was recorded by the store's surveillance system, capturing Yost’s pleas for help as he was attacked. Wilson and his accomplices were apprehended by police about 14 hours later when they were found in a car with rolls of money and items stolen from the store, including new tennis shoes with price tags still attached.
Wilson confessed to the police that the robbery and the murder were planned, as they wanted to eliminate Yost to prevent him from identifying them. The brutal beating left Yost dead, and he was discovered later that day by a customer.
The case led to significant media attention, and in 2014, Wilson was executed by lethal injection after being convicted of first-degree murder. He maintained that he had changed and expressed remorse before his execution. He was the third person convicted for the crime; two of his accomplices had already been executed in earlier years.
