— Michael Iver Peterson
Michael Iver Peterson was born on October 23, 1943, near Nashville, Tennessee. He grew up in a typical American family and attended local schools when he was young. Later, he graduated from Duke University with a bachelor’s degree in political science. While at Duke, he was active in student life. He served as president of the Sigma Nu fraternity and was the editor of the student newspaper, The Chronicle.
In 1965, Michael married Patricia Sue Peterson. Together, they had two children named Clayton and Todd. During his early adult years, Michael enlisted in the Marines in 1968. He served for four years but faced a permanent disability due to a car accident, which led to his discharge.
After their marriage, Michael and Patricia moved to Germany. While living there, they became friends with another family, the Ratliffs. This friendship became significant when George Ratliff passed away. After that event, Michael and Patricia became very close to Elizabeth Ratliff and her children. When Elizabeth died in 1985, Michael took on the responsibility of caring for her two children.
In 1989, after separating from Patricia, Michael began a relationship with Kathleen Peterson, a successful business executive. He and Kathleen married in 1997. The couple blended their families, bringing together Kathleen’s daughter and Michael’s sons.
Throughout his life, Michael pursued writing and politics. He published three novels and a biography. He also wrote for the Durham Herald newspaper, where his opinions on local issues sometimes sparked controversy. Michael ran for public office several times, experiencing both support and criticism from the community.
On December 9, 2001, Michael Iver Peterson called the emergency services to report that he had found his wife, Kathleen Peterson, at the bottom of their staircase. He claimed that she had fallen down the stairs. At the time, he stated that she might have been influenced by alcohol and valium. After the emergency responders arrived, Kathleen was pronounced dead at the scene.

An autopsy revealed significant injuries on Kathleen's body. The report indicated that she had seven lacerations on her head, which were consistent with blows from a blunt object. Medical experts stated that these injuries were unlikely to have been caused by a simple fall. They noted that she also had a fracture of the thyroid neck cartilage. Because Michael was the only person present when Kathleen died, he became the main suspect in her murder.
Michael Peterson pleaded not guilty to the murder charge. In the trial, prosecutors presented evidence that suggested the couple's marriage may not have been as happy as Michael claimed. They suggested that Kathleen had discovered information about Michael’s private life that could lead to tension in their marriage. The defense argued that Kathleen was aware of and accepted all aspects of Michael's life, emphasizing their close relationship and support from friends.
During the investigation, suspicion also arose regarding the death of Elizabeth Ratliff, who died in 1985 in Germany under similar circumstances. Elizabeth was also found at the bottom of a staircase. Initially, her death was attributed to a medical condition, but a subsequent autopsy conducted after Kathleen's death concluded that Elizabeth had died from head injuries consistent with a homicidal assault.

On October 10, 2003, after a lengthy trial, a jury found Michael Peterson guilty of the murder of Kathleen Peterson. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. His attempts to appeal the conviction were ultimately unsuccessful.
