Bio

Michael Hamer was born in England in 1991. He grew up in Bury, Greater Manchester, and attended St Gabriel's Roman Catholic High School. Reports presented during his trial described him as an isolated teenager who had been bullied by other students and who struggled socially. Psychologists who evaluated him stated that he suffered from an adjustment disorder and emotional difficulties.

Hamer reportedly preferred the company of younger pupils and spent much of his free time alone, often playing computer games and creating school timetables and fantasy scenarios involving younger students. Despite these issues, there was no public indication before March 2006 that he would commit a homicide.

Murder Story

On March 1, 2006, 14-year-old Michael Hamer lured 11-year-old Joe Geeling to his home in Bury, Greater Manchester. He used a forged letter, supposedly from a deputy head teacher, to persuade Joe to come to the house.

According to prosecutors, Hamer had developed a sexual interest in Joe and had written several drafts of letters concerning him. During the meeting, Hamer made a sexual advance toward Joe. The court heard that Joe rejected the advance, called Hamer "gay," and threatened to tell others about what had happened.

The rejection triggered a violent attack. Hamer first struck Joe repeatedly with a frying pan, causing severe head injuries, including multiple bruises and a fractured eye socket. He then retrieved two kitchen knives and stabbed the 11-year-old 16 times. The attack punctured Joe's windpipe in two places and severed a major artery.

After killing him, Hamer dragged Joe's body downstairs, placed it inside a wheelie bin, and transported it to nearby Whitehead Park. There, he concealed the body beneath debris in a gully.

Hamer then returned home and attempted to clean up the bloodstains. He told his mother that the red stains on the carpet had been caused by a leaking pen. He even completed his homework and went to school the following day as though nothing had happened.

A major search operation began when Joe failed to return home. His body was discovered on March 2, 2006. During police interviews, Hamer initially provided several explanations, including claims that he had intended only to frighten Joe. He later admitted that the murder occurred after his sexual advance had been rejected.

At the start of his trial at Manchester Crown Court, Hamer pleaded guilty to murder. Mr. Justice McCombe stated that Joe had done absolutely nothing to encourage Hamer's sexual advance and that the rejection had triggered the attack. Psychiatric evidence indicated that Hamer was suffering from an adjustment disorder at the time of the killing, although he was found criminally responsible for his actions.

On October 16, 2006, Michael Hamer was sentenced to life imprisonment, Minimum term of 12 years before eligibility for parole consideration. The sentence did not guarantee release after 12 years, it merely established the earliest date on which he could apply for parole.
