murder story
On 15 March 1986, the body of James Burns, a 37-year-old railway worker, was found in a derelict flat in Kensington, London. The investigation struggled to make progress because there were no clear connections between Burns and a suspect.
Shortly after, on 6 April 1986, the corpse of a 24-year-old man named Anthony Connolly was discovered on a railway embankment in Brixton. Connolly had been strangled with his own scarf. Because he had been living with a man who was HIV positive, there was a significant delay in examining the body. This delay caused tensions between the authorities and the gay community, who felt their concerns were not being taken seriously.
On 18 May 1986, Michael del Marco Lupo was arrested and charged with the murders of both Connolly and Burns. A few days later, on 21 May, he was also charged in connection with two additional murders. One victim was Damien McCloskey, a young hospital worker who had been strangled in West London. The other victim was an unidentified man murdered near Hungerford Bridge over the Thames. Lupo faced charges of four murders in total, as well as two counts of attempted murder.
In July 1987, Lupo stood trial at the Old Bailey. He pleaded guilty to all charges and received four life sentences along with an additional 14 years in prison. Authorities later investigated Lupo's activities in places he had visited like New York City, Berlin, and Los Angeles, looking for links to unsolved murders there, but no further evidence surfaced.
Michael del Marco Lupo died on 12 February 1995 in Frankland Prison in County Durham, England. He succumbed to an AIDS-related illness. Lupo had contracted the disease shortly before he committed his first murder. He expressed to the police that discovering his medical condition led him to develop a disdain for fellow homosexuals, which he claimed fueled his violent actions. He spent his last years in a prison hospital.
