— Michael Adam Sigala
Michael Adam Sigala was born on December 11, 1977, in Tarrant County, Texas. He grew up in an environment that appeared troubled. His childhood was marked by significant issues, including interactions with the law at a young age. By the time he was a teenager, he had already faced legal troubles and was arrested. When he was just 13 years old, he was caught for burglary, which led to his first experience with the juvenile justice system.
As Sigala grew up, he continued to have conflicts with the law. Reports indicate that he was involved in various illicit activities, particularly related to theft and drug use. His early life was characterized by a lack of stability, both at home and in his community. By the time he was 11th grade, he dropped out of school. His difficulties in education were compounded by behavioral issues, which ultimately led to his expulsion from public school grounds for carrying a gun.
Throughout his teenage years, he accumulated several offenses, including marijuana possession and thefts. This history of delinquency suggested a pattern of behavior that led him down a criminal path. At some point, Sigala attempted to turn his life around, working as a laborer and even holding a job as a security guard at a racetrack. However, he was still deeply impacted by past decisions and addiction issues.
In his early twenties, Sigala was placed on probation for robbery. This was part of a continuing struggle with drug addiction, leading him to attend rehabilitation programs. Despite these efforts, he remained in a precarious position within the criminal justice system. On August 22, 2000, while out on a one-day pass to seek employment, he committed a double homicide.
On August 22, 2000, Michael Adam Sigala broke into the apartment of Kleber and Lilian Dos Santos in Plano, Texas. Once inside, he fatally shot Kleber in the head. Afterward, he bound Lilian's hands and neck with telephone cords. He then assaulted and tortured her in various ways before shooting her twice in the head, killing her as well.
Following the murders, Sigala ransacked the apartment, stealing items, including the couple's wedding rings. He then disposed of evidence in an attempt to cover up his actions. Two months later, police arrested Sigala after they recovered some of the stolen property, which led investigators back to him.
During police questioning, Sigala initially denied involvement but later confessed to the murders. He made statements about the killings and admitted to stealing the couple’s rings. DNA testing linked him to the scene of the crime, confirming his presence.
Sigala faced trial for his actions, where the prosecution presented evidence of his criminal history and lack of remorse. Eventually, a jury found him guilty of capital murder. He was sentenced to death on October 15, 2001, and was executed by lethal injection in Texas on March 2, 2010. In his final words, he expressed wishes for forgiveness from the victims' family and stated that he did not understand why he committed the crimes.
