— Matthew Quesada
Matthew Quesada was born in 1986. He grew up in East London, England. As he grew older, Quesada developed a strong interest in action films, especially the Bourne trilogy. He spent a lot of time online studying combat moves from the films.
Friends and family noticed changes in his behavior over time. They described his interest in the films as unhealthy. He often spoke about wanting to defend himself and his family, and he would express anger towards those he thought disrespected him. In conversations, he would rant about being able to fight back if someone attacked him.
Quesada had a daughter, and some reports suggest he was a father at a young age. He shared custody of his daughter with his girlfriend Maria Brigette.
In the years leading up to 2011, Quesada's behavior continued to concern those around him. Family members expressed worries about his mental state. Some even believed he might be struggling with psychological issues, although it is unclear if he ever received professional help.
This period of his life led to a tragic incident in March 2011 that would change everything for him and others.
On March 26, 2011, Matthew Quesada fatally attacked 63-year-old Alan Smith in a cafe in London, England. The incident started at a different cafe where Smith expressed concern for Quesada's crying daughter. This interaction led to a confrontation between the two men. Quesada became enraged and left the cafe, dropping off his daughter at home. He then returned armed with a knife.
Upon his return, Quesada approached Smith and without saying a word, he attacked, stabbing Smith multiple times. Witnesses reported that the assault took place very quickly. A medical team attempted open-heart surgery in the cafe, but Smith did not survive the injuries and died later that day in the hospital.
After the attack, Quesada fled the scene, jumping over fences as he made his escape. He attempted to destroy evidence by burning his clothes and cutting his hair. Quesada also researched flight information to Brazil in an effort to evade capture. He was arrested the following day while sitting in a car with his mother.
During the investigation, police discovered the knife used in the attack hidden in his home, along with other weapons. Quesada was later convicted of murder and sentenced to serve a minimum of 26 years in prison on July 13, 2012.
