December 8, 1989Matthew Marshall was born on July 23, 1964.
On November 1, 1988, in the Martin Correctional Institute in Florida, Matthew Marshall killed fellow inmate Jeffrey Henry. Marshall and Henry had a conflict over a gambling debt. Henry was known in the prison as the “muscle man” who helped other inmates run football pools. On that day, inmates instructed Marshall to collect his winnings from Henry.
Witnesses heard noises coming from Henry's cell, where it seemed a struggle was happening. They later saw Marshall leaving the cell covered in blood. Minutes after that, he returned to Henry's cell, and the noises resumed. Once again, Marshall exited, this time even more bloodied.
When guards arrived, they found Jeffrey Henry dead on the floor of his cell. His sweatpants were pulled down, and his hands were tied behind his back. The cause of death was severe blows to the back of the head.
Marshall claimed during his trial that he killed Henry in self-defense because Henry had attacked him first. He was arrested on the same day as the murder and charged with first-degree murder. On December 12, 1989, he was convicted and sentenced to death.
