2004 - 2007Matthew Emmanuel Macon was born on September 8, 1979 in Michigan. His older sister was removed from their home and placed in foster care because of the abuse she faced. By the time he was 14, he had already been involved in serious offenses, including a sexual assault. He pursued a life of crime, including breaking and entering and theft.
Throughout his youth, Macon was in and out of juvenile facilities. He was placed in homes for delinquent youths several times. At the age of 16, he participated in treatment programs for sex offenders after being diagnosed with issues related to sexual behavior. The court noted at the time that he required "lifetime vigilance."
In 2001, he started serving time in prison. He was released on parole in 2007 but was arrested again shortly after due to several violations, including failing to register as a sex offender.
Matthew Emmanuel Macon, also known as "Chilly," was a serial killer in Michigan linked to the deaths of six women between 2004 and 2007. His criminal activities gained significant attention when police arrested him in August 2007.
The killings began with the murder of Ruth Hallman, a 76-year-old neighborhood activist who was found beaten in her home on July 26, 2007. She died two days later from her injuries. Less than two weeks later, on August 7, the body of 36-year-old Deborah Kaye Cooke was discovered in Hunter Park. She had been beaten and sexually assaulted.
On August 9, 46-year-old Debra Renfors was found dead in her home. The police were called to her house after her friends reported her missing. Shortly thereafter, on August 27, Sandra Eichorn, a 64-year-old retiree, was also found murdered in her home. Finally, on August 29, 41-year-old Karen Delgado-Yates was discovered barely alive in a vacant house and later died from her injuries.
Macon was arrested on August 28, 2007, after investigations pointed towards him as a suspect. He was a parolee and registered sex offender with a long criminal history. Law enforcement believed there were similarities between the recent killings and other unsolved cases from prior years. Following his arrest, he faced multiple charges for the murders and was also linked to a sixth murder from 2004.
After extensive investigations, a judge ruled that there was enough evidence to charge Macon with the murders of Eichorn and Delgado-Yates. Forensic evidence, including DNA found at the crime scenes, matched Macon’s profiles. He was sentenced to two life terms in prison without the possibility of parole on June 18, 2008.
