— Martin Sauceda Vega
Martin Sauceda Vega was born on October 17, 1945. He spent his early life in Texas. Details about his childhood and family life are not widely documented. However, as he grew up, Vega faced many challenges. He did not complete much formal education and described himself as a jack-of-all-trades.
As an adult, Vega became involved in various criminal activities. He had several run-ins with the law, leading to arrests and convictions. His criminal history included charges of burglary and drug dealing. He served significant prison time for some of these offenses. For example, he was sentenced to eighteen years for a drug charge, but he was released on parole after serving only part of his sentence.
By the mid-1980s, Vega was living in Luling, Texas. At that time, he was already known to law enforcement due to his past criminal record. His life took a critical turn when he began an affair with Linda Mims, who was married to James Williams Mims. Vega’s relationship with Linda eventually played a significant role in the events that unfolded in his life.
On July 27, 1985, James William Mims was shot and killed in Caldwell County, Texas. He was shot eight times with a .22 caliber handgun. His body was found on the side of the road, and police noted that he had been left there after an attempt to drown him.
For two and a half years, the murder remained unsolved. On January 2, 1988, Martin Sauceda Vega walked into a police station in Luling, Texas, and confessed to the murder. He stated that he had plotted the killing for a promise of $30,000 out of Mims' life insurance policy. Along with his confession, Vega led police to the handgun used in the crime.
Vega claimed that Linda Mims, James's wife, had encouraged him to commit the murder so she could collect the insurance money. However, prosecutors could not confirm his story. Consequently, Linda Mims was never charged with any crime in connection with her husband's death.
In court, Vega’s past criminal actions came to light. He had a history of violent crimes, including allegations of rape at gunpoint. Testimony about his previous offenses played a significant role during the punishment phase of his trial. Ultimately, Vega was found guilty of capital murder and was sentenced to death.
Vega spent nearly ten years on death row before his execution on January 26, 1999. When he was executed, he maintained his innocence and made a controversial final statement. He accused the justice system of wrongdoing and asserted that he was a victim of a conspiracy. Despite his claims of innocence, he was pronounced dead after the execution drugs were administered.
