— Mark Storm
Mark Storm was born in 1967. He grew up in Wheeling, West Virginia. It is known that he worked as a riverboat pilot.
In March 1997, Storm was facing personal challenges. He had been struggling with stress and panic disorder. His mental health led him to check into the Ohio Valley Medical Center a few days before the tragic events of March 7. He entered the facility seeking help for his problems. Storm stayed there for a few days but checked himself out just a few hours before the events that would change his life and the lives of many others.
On the day he left the hospital, Storm spoke on the phone with his brother and mother. They were worried about him and wanted to make sure he received proper care. Afterward, he attended a birthday party for a neighbor's daughter. People at the party noticed that he seemed stressed and quiet, which raised some concern.
After the party, Mark went home to his family. He shared his life with his wife, Betty, and their two daughters, Jessica and Megan. Later that night, he would make decisions that would alter the course of his life forever.
On March 7, 1997, Mark Storm checked himself out of a psychiatric hospital in Wheeling, West Virginia. Later that day, he attended a birthday party for a neighbor's daughter with his family. After only a short time at the party, he left feeling stressed.
Once home, Mark began his violent spree. He first shot his wife, Betty, who was 26 years old, in the living room. Then, he moved to his daughters' room, where he shot Jessica, 8, and Megan, 3, while they were sleeping in their bunk beds.
After committing these acts, Mark drove a couple of miles to his mother’s house. There, he shot his brother, Benjamin, who was 32 years old. He also shot their mother, Roberta Myles, who was 59.
After shooting his family, Mark drove to a childhood fishing spot along the Ohio River. There, he turned the gun on himself, using the last bullet from his pistol to take his own life. Police later found his body in the water at that location. All six victims died from gunshot wounds.
