— Mark Andrew Twitchell
Mark Andrew Twitchell was born on July 4, 1979, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. He grew up in a middle-class family and was exposed to various interests from a young age. Twitchell showed an early fascination with storytelling and filmmaking. He aspired to be a filmmaker and worked on several projects during his youth.
In 1997, Twitchell graduated from high school and continued to pursue his interest in film. He went on to study at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology, where he learned about film production and editing. Throughout the years, he produced various short films, showing creativity and ambition. He enjoyed various genres, including horror, and often drew inspiration from pop culture, including films like "Star Wars."
By the fall of 2008, Twitchell was living in Edmonton and was renting a garage for his filmmaking projects. He was married and had a young child, balancing family life with his aspirations in film. During this time, he began to work on a short horror film that utilized his creativity and passion for storytelling.
Twitchell was also active on social media and various online platforms. He often expressed his thoughts and ideas about filmmaking on these sites. His engagement online revealed some of his interests, including topics related to horror and serial killers, specifically a fictional character named Dexter Morgan.
In his personal life, Twitchell faced challenges. He was known to have a girlfriend outside his marriage, complicating his family life. His interests and ambitions in filmmaking began to take a darker turn as he became increasingly fascinated with violent themes.
Overall, Twitchell's early life showed a blend of creative aspirations and personal struggles which would later influence his actions.
On October 10, 2008, Mark Andrew Twitchell killed John Brian "Johnny" Altinger, a 38-year-old man. Altinger was lured to a rented garage in Edmonton, Alberta, through an online dating site. He believed he was meeting a woman he had met online. Once Altinger arrived, he was attacked. Twitchell struck him with a pipe and then stabbed him with a knife, leading to Altinger's death.
After the murder, Twitchell dismembered Altinger's body and disposed of the remains in a city sewer. Later, he attempted to cover up his actions. Altinger’s disappearance was noted when he sent strange emails to friends, claiming he was going on vacation. His concerned friends reported him missing, which led to an investigation by the Edmonton Police Service.
Twitchell was arrested on October 31, 2008, after police found incriminating evidence. A significant piece of evidence was a document on Twitchell's laptop, titled "SKConfessions." This document outlined his plans and experiences related to becoming a serial killer. It included detailed descriptions of the murder and the dismemberment process.
During his trial, Twitchell admitted to killing Altinger. However, he claimed it was in self-defense and argued that parts of the document were exaggerated or fictional. The jury ultimately found him guilty of first-degree murder on April 12, 2011. He was sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 25 years. Twitchell also faced an attempted murder charge related to an incident where he allegedly attacked another man, but this charge was later stayed.
