murder story

In late 1962 or early 1963, brothers Santos and Cayetano Hernández arrived in the impoverished village of Yerba Buena, Tamaulipas. They proclaimed themselves prophets of the Inca gods, convincing the illiterate villagers that they would receive hidden treasures in exchange for worship and tributes. To solidify their control, the Hernández brothers recruited Magdalena and her brother Eleazar from Monterrey. Using smoke and mirrors, they presented Magdalena as the reincarnation of the goddess Cōātlīcue. Over time, Magdalena began to believe in her divine status, taking over leadership of the cult.

Under her command, the cult's practices grew increasingly violent. Dissenting members were subjected to brutal rituals involving beatings, mutilation, and bloodletting. The victims' blood was collected in chalices, mixed with animal blood and narcotics, and consumed by Magdalena and other cult members. These acts were believed to grant supernatural powers and eternal youth. The cult's reign of terror lasted approximately six weeks, resulting in multiple deaths.

In May 1963, 14-year-old Sebastián Guerrero stumbled upon one of the cult's rituals and reported it to the police. Initially dismissed, he was later accompanied by officer Luis Martínez to investigate. Both disappeared, prompting a military-led crackdown on May 31, 1963. Magdalena and Eleazar were arrested, while Santos Hernández was killed resisting arrest, and Cayetano Hernández was murdered by a cult member. The dismembered bodies of Guerrero and Martínez were found near the Solís residence, along with six other mutilated corpses in nearby caves.

In April 1964, Magdalena and Eleazar Solís were convicted of two murders and sentenced to 50 years in prison. Due to a lack of testimony from surviving cult members, their involvement in other murders couldn't be legally established. The fate of Magdalena Solís after her imprisonment remains unknown.
