Bio

Lyndon Dechard Mosley was born in 1982 and was a student at Southwest DeKalb High School in DeKalb County, Georgia. At the time of the incident, Mosley was 14 years old. He was still a juvenile, but the seriousness of the crime led prosecutors to handle the case in adult court.

Mosley had been involved in disciplinary trouble at school shortly before the stabbing. The day before the killing, he had reportedly been placed on in-school suspension for skipping classes. On September 18, 1997, school officials again encountered him outside class, and he was described as uncooperative before leaving the school building area. Soon after, he crossed paths with Ronald Gaines near the athletic field.

Murder Story

On September 18, 1997, Lyndon Mosley and Ronald Gaines became involved in an argument near the athletic field at Southwest DeKalb High School. Gaines was 16 years old and a junior at the school. Mosley was 14 years old. The two teenagers reportedly did not know each other well before the confrontation.

The argument began after Gaines made insulting comments toward Mosley and another student. Mosley responded, and the exchange became more heated. A group of students gathered nearby as the confrontation moved toward the football field area.

During the argument, Mosley had a knife. Gaines picked up a rock after seeing the weapon but then put it down. At one point, Gaines appeared to move away, but the confrontation continued after comments from people in the crowd. Gaines then turned back toward Mosley and swung at him. Mosley stabbed Gaines once in the chest.

The wound was fatal. Medical testimony later showed that the knife entered Gaines’s chest and damaged his heart and lungs. Gaines walked a short distance after being stabbed but collapsed near a school building. He died from blood loss within minutes. After the stabbing, Mosley left the scene. The knife used in the killing was never recovered. He surrendered to police about two hours later.

Mosley was charged with malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a weapon on school property. His defense argued that he acted in self-defense and that the stabbing happened during a fight. Prosecutors argued that Mosley’s decision to bring and use a knife on school property turned a schoolyard confrontation into a homicide.

On April 17, 1998, a jury found Mosley guilty of voluntary manslaughter, felony murder, and possession of a weapon on school property. The court ultimately entered judgment on the felony murder conviction connected to possession of a weapon on school property. He was sentenced to life imprisonment on December 4, 1998. The Supreme Court of Georgia affirmed the conviction on October 10, 2000, ruling that Mosley’s possession of the knife on school property was dangerous under the circumstances and created a foreseeable risk of death.
