— Luke Woodham
Luke Woodham was born on February 5, 1981, in Pearl, Mississippi. He grew up in a home where his family faced difficulties. His parents had a troubled marriage, which eventually led to their divorce. This situation caused tension in the household, and Luke had a complicated relationship with his mother, Mary Woodham.
As a child, Luke was described as chubby and often teased at school. He struggled to make friends and felt out of place. Reports indicate that he was bullied by his classmates, who called him names like "nerd." Luke found solace in certain interests, especially in art, where he excelled. However, the emotional struggles he faced during his teenage years affected him deeply.
In his late teenage years, he became involved with a group of friends who were reportedly influenced by darker beliefs, including some aspects of the occult. He claimed that a friend introduced him to a group known as "The Kroth," which was associated with satanic practices. This relationship with the group seemed to enhance his feelings of anger and isolation.
Despite these issues, Luke also had moments of reflection. He seemed to feel misunderstood and believed that the world had wronged him. According to his writings and statements, he felt significant resentment towards society for how he was treated. He expressed feelings of anger and frustration about his broken romantic relationship with his ex-girlfriend, Christina Menefee.
Throughout his early life, it appears that Luke dealt with many internal conflicts and external pressures that shaped his views and feelings about himself and the world around him.
On October 1, 1997, Luke Woodham killed his mother, Mary Woodham, by stabbing and beating her to death in their home. He claimed during his trial that he did not remember this act. Later that same day, he drove to Pearl High School in her car with a rifle concealed under his trench coat. Once inside the school, he opened fire, killing his ex-girlfriend Christina Menefee and her friend Lydia Dew, while injuring seven other students.
After the shooting, he was subdued by an assistant principal who retrieved a gun from his vehicle. When questioned about his actions, Woodham responded, "Life has wronged me, sir." He confessed to the shooting but maintained that he did not recall killing his mother.
There were separate trials for the murder of his mother and the events at the school. Woodham was found guilty of both and was sentenced to life in prison for murdering his mother, followed by two life sentences for the school shootings. Additionally, he received seven 20-year sentences for the attempted murders of the injured students. He is currently serving multiple life sentences and will be eligible for parole in 2046.
