— Leroy Pooler
Leroy Pooler was born on January 27, 1948. He grew up in Florida, where he spent his early years. He had a troubled relationship with women, particularly with one named Kim Brown. Pooler began a romantic relationship with Kim Brown. Pooler had intense feelings for Kim, which may have led to jealousy.
Over time, Kim decided to end her relationship with Pooler. This decision was not easy for him. He reportedly struggled to cope with the breakup. At one point, it emerged that Kim was dating someone else.
On January 30, 1995, Leroy Pooler went to the home of his ex-girlfriend, Kim Brown, in Palm Beach County, Florida. Kim was inside the apartment with her brother, Alvonza Colson, when Pooler knocked on the door. Kim told Pooler that she did not want to see him anymore. Alvonza opened the door to ask Pooler what he wanted. When Alvonza saw that Pooler had a gun, he tried to run away. Pooler then shot him in the back and pulled him back into the apartment.
As this happened, Kim pleaded with Pooler not to harm her or her brother. She asked Pooler to let Alvonza call for an ambulance. Pooler initially agreed but soon changed his mind and told Alvonza to wait until he and Kim left. Kim followed Pooler to the front door but locked it after he went outside. Alvonza told Kim to escape through the back of the apartment, but he discovered that the phone wires had been cut.
Pooler broke through the front door again and found Alvonza hiding in the apartment. However, he was distracted by Kim's cries for help. He left Alvonza and chased after Kim. Pooler struck Kim in the head with the gun, causing it to fire. He then dragged her toward his car as she begged him not to kill her. Kim fought back, but Pooler shot her multiple times. Witnesses saw the attack, and Kim was shot five times, including once in the head. Pooler drove away from the scene.
Two days before the murder, Kim confided in a friend that Pooler had threatened to kill her because he believed that if he could not have her, no one else could. After the shooting, Pooler was charged with several crimes, including first-degree murder. He was found guilty and sentenced to death on March 29, 1996.
