— Leonard Young
Leonard J. Young was born on January 22, 1945. He grew up in the United States, although specific details about his early childhood are not widely documented. He became known for a series of violent acts later in life.
In the early 1990s, Young met a woman during the Christmas holidays. They started a romantic relationship that lasted until early 1993. In 1992, this woman moved to a home located on a large wooded lot in Hardeman County, Tennessee. This setting would later become significant in Young's life.
During the years following his relationship, Young had various interactions with those around him. He had a niece who lived in midtown Memphis, and he visited her in November 1999 after a long period of not seeing her. On this visit, he drove a 1989 Ford Bronco, which he had taken without permission.
His behavior exhibited signs of instability. Despite his complex personal life, Young's actions became increasingly concerning. This culminated in a series of events in late 1999 that led to serious criminal charges against him. Though his early life doesn't reveal many details, it sets the stage for the actions that would later define his notoriety.
On November 16, 1999, Leonard Young entered the home of his former girlfriend by breaking a bedroom window. He carried a sawed-off shotgun and spoke to the woman for about forty-five minutes. Afterward, he stole her red Mercedes and drove away. The next day, on November 17, Young threatened William Bramlett, who he had previously known. Bramlett was later found dead in his trailer, having been shot in the back of the head with a .22 caliber pistol.
On November 19, 1999, Young abducted 24-year-old Hillary Johnson, forcing her to drive around Memphis. After a short time, Young released Hillary but later killed her. Her body was discovered on December 4, 1999, hidden beneath tin near a field as described by Young during police questioning.
After committing these crimes, Young was arrested on November 30, 1999. He was charged with first-degree murder, theft, and aggravated kidnapping. Following a trial, he was found guilty. On November 8, 2002, Leonard Young was sentenced to death for the murder of Hillary Johnson.
