Bio

Leonard Melvin Shockley was born in 1941 or 1942. He grew up in a family that lived in Omar, Delaware. Leonard had at least one brother named Harold. Not much is known about his early childhood, but it is reported that he lived with his parents and his siblings during this time.

In January 1958, Leonard was 16 years old. On the morning of January 16, he and Harold drove to Snow Hill, Maryland, in a car provided by a dealership while their mother’s car was being repaired. They were accompanied by a sister who was later left to visit a friend. During this trip, Leonard suggested they go to Boxiron, a small village nearby. It was during this visit that events would change their lives forever.

While they were in Boxiron, Leonard drove to a country store. He had a dagger-style knife on his belt at the time. This day would be marked in history as the day he was involved in a tragic event, but specific details about his life leading up to this day remain limited.

Leonard became known for the crime he committed at a young age. At the time of his arrest, he was still a teenager, which made him a juvenile in the eyes of the law. His older brother, Harold, was 23 at the time and had a troubled past, having just begun serving a life sentence when Leonard faced his fate. Their family background and personal circumstances may have played a role in the events that unfolded.

Leonard was arrested on the same day as the incident. He was ultimately tried for murder, and evidence pointed towards a life filled with conflict and difficulty leading to the tragic event that defined his legacy. Leonard Shockley’s life came to an end when he was executed in 1959, a tragic turn given his young age and the complicated web of family and social issues surrounding him.

Murder Story

Leonard Melvin Shockley was involved in the murder of Sarah Hearne, a storekeeper, on January 16, 1958, when he was 16 years old. Leonard and his older brother, Harold, were indicted for the crime in Dorchester County, Maryland. They were accused of first-degree murder, which was confirmed through their actions on the day of the event.

On that day, Leonard and Harold drove to a small village called Boxiron in a borrowed car. At around 1:00 PM, they arrived at a country store where the incident occurred. Leonard was carrying a knife on his belt. As they entered the store, Sarah Hearne, the storekeeper, came to serve them.

Witnesses later reported hearing noises coming from inside the store. A neighbor named Clarence Bishop noticed something was wrong when he heard a scuffle. He ran to notify someone else, but by the time he returned to the store, the brothers had already left. Sarah was found dead at her home after being attacked.

The police investigated the scene and discovered that the cash register in the store had been tampered with. Blood was found in the store and along the path Sarah took back to her home. Later that evening, police arrested Leonard and Harold at their home. They gave statements admitting to their involvement in the attack.

Leonard's confession revealed that he and Harold had initially planned to rob the store. He admitted to stabbing Sarah and cutting her throat. Harold, however, claimed he had not been aware of the robbery plan and entered the store only after hearing a disturbance. Despite their conflicting stories, both brothers were found guilty of murder.

Following the trial, Leonard Melvin Shockley was sentenced to death and was executed by gas chamber on April 10, 1959. His brother, Harold, was sentenced to life imprisonment.
