Leon Davis Jr. was born on December 14, 1977, in Lake Wales, Florida. He enjoyed activities like four-wheeling and listening to country music. At 6 feet 5 inches tall, Davis was known to be a good athlete and played basketball in high school.
Even though Davis was often seen as a good athlete, he had a problem with getting into fights. In 2002, he and his girlfriend faced legal trouble when they were arrested for shoplifting about $50 worth of products from Walmart.
In July 2006, Davis bought a house but it caused significant financial stress. He ended up over $196,000 in debt. He wrote a blog post in January 2007 where he reflected on his past and expressed a desire to improve his life, stating, "I have hurt people in the past and I'm sorry for it!" He also mentioned wanting to live his life the right way for his family and friends. A month later, Davis married his longtime girlfriend, Victoria Campo.
murder story
On December 7, 2007, Leon Davis Jr. entered a gas station in Polk County. Inside, he shot and killed two men, Pravinkumar Patel and Dashrath Patel, at close range. After the shootings, he did not take any money and left the scene. The incident was recorded on security cameras, but he was not identified from the footage.
On December 13, 2007, Davis went to an insurance office in Lake Wales. He was familiar with one of the employees, Yvonne Bustamante. He also encountered Juanita "Jane" Luciano, who was pregnant. Davis forced both women into a backroom, demanded they open a safe, and bound them with duct tape. He then poured gasoline on them and set them on fire. The fire burned through the tape, allowing them to escape briefly, but they were found in critical condition.
Both women were hospitalized. Yvonne Bustamante died from her injuries on December 18, and Juanita Luciano passed away on January 8, together with her unborn child. Before she died, Luciano identified Davis as her attacker. After realizing he was a suspect, Davis turned himself in on December 14, which was his 30th birthday.
Evidence from the crime scenes linked Davis to both the December 7 and December 13 murders. He became one of the most wanted suspects in Florida. His crimes were noted as the worst killing spree in Polk County history.
Davis faced trials for his actions. The first trial began in early 2010 but was declared a mistrial due to an unconfirmed witness statement. A second trial was held where he was found guilty, and the jury sentenced him to death for his three murders. In total, he received a life sentence for the death of Luciano’s unborn child.
Davis faced another trial in 2012, where he was again sentenced to death. He attempted to appeal his sentences in 2016, but the Florida Supreme Court upheld the decisions. Davis is currently awaiting execution at the Union Correctional Institution.
