— Lee Andrew Taylor
Lee Andrew Taylor was born on January 8, 1979, in Galveston, Texas. He grew up in a challenging environment. From an early age, Taylor faced many difficulties, including instability in his home life. He was on his own by the age of 13 and began living on the streets of Houston. This lifestyle exposed him to drugs and crime.
At 16, he was involved in a serious crime. In 1995, Taylor robbed an elderly couple, John and Mildred Hampton, in their home. The robbery turned violent, and he brutally attacked them. As a result of the injuries, John Hampton later died, and Mildred was severely injured. Taylor was charged with aggravated robbery and was sentenced to life in prison.
While serving his sentence at the Barry Telford Unit in New Boston, Taylor became involved with the Aryan Brotherhood of Texas, a white supremacist prison gang. This group is known for violence and is considered a security threat in the prison system.
Taylor had a previous prison record before being convicted for another serious crime. His life sentence for the robbery came in 1996. He had nine years of formal education before his incarceration, which limited his job prospects and opportunities while in prison.
His life took another turn on April 1, 1999, when an incident occurred that changed everything again. Taylor was involved in a fight with another inmate, Donta Greene. This conflict was believed to be influenced by racial tensions in the prison. The fight ended badly, leading to Taylor being charged with capital murder later that year.
On April 1, 1999, Lee Andrew Taylor fatally stabbed fellow inmate Donta Greene at the Telford Unit in Bowie County, Texas. Taylor, who was a member of the Aryan Brotherhood of Texas, attacked Greene with a homemade weapon, known as a shank, that resembled an ice pick. The incident stemmed from racial tensions between Taylor and Greene.
Before the attack, there had been a theft involving property from another inmate's cell, and it was suspected that Greene was involved. Taylor and another inmate, Daniel Richbourg, planned to retaliate against Greene due to this theft.
That morning, after the inmates were released from their cells, Taylor approached Greene and struck him. He then placed Greene in a headlock and repeatedly stabbed him in the chest with the shank. During the assault, Taylor shouted at Greene, “That’s what you get for stealing.” Richbourg helped by brandishing his weapon to keep other inmates away while Taylor stabbed Greene.
Taylor inflicted multiple stab wounds, with 13 puncture wounds being fatal. After the attack, he appeared euphoric and boasted about the stabbing. Later that day, he was arrested for the crime.
On February 22, 2000, Taylor was sentenced to death for the murder. He spent many years on death row before being executed by lethal injection on June 16, 2011. During his final moments, he claimed he acted in self-defense and expressed regret for killing Greene while maintaining that Greene would not have been in prison if he were a good person. Taylor's last words included a message to Greene's family and a comment that the death penalty was unjust.
