1948Lazslo Varga was born in 1930 in Hungary. He grew up during a time of great change and hardship in his home country. After World War II, many Hungarians, including Varga, sought a better life in other countries. Varga decided to leave Hungary and emigrated to the United States.
After arriving in the U.S., Varga began traveling. He was hitchhiking across eastern Nevada and met many people along the way. He often asked if they could help him find a Lutheran Counselor. Varga claimed that he had come from New York and had been traveling with the support of Lutheran Councils.
While in Wells, a town in Elko County, Varga was directed to the home of Reverend Morning, a Presbyterian minister. When he arrived at the Reverend’s house, the Reverend was not home. Varga later committed a crime at the house involving Reverend Morning’s wife.
Lazslo Varga’s journey ended when he faced execution in Nevada State Prison on June 7, 1949. He was only nineteen years old at the time of his death. Before the execution, he expressed a wish to wear a black shroud with a white cross on the back, as this was a tradition in Hungary for those expecting to die soon.
