Larry Green, born circa 1952, was in his early 20s when he became a core member of the Death Angels, an extremist group responsible for the racially motivated Zebra Murders that terrorized San Francisco from 1973 to 1974. Public records offer few details about Green's life prior to the killings—his early upbringing, education, and employment remain largely undocumented.
At the time of his arrest, Green worked at the Black Self-Help Center in San Francisco. Alongside other members, including Manuel Moore and J.C. Simon, he was allegedly involved in martial arts-style training and ideological indoctrination that formed the backbone of the Death Angels' violent mission.
murder story
On October 20, 1973, Green participated in the abduction of Richard and Quita Hague. The couple was kidnapped at gunpoint while walking near their home and forced into a van. Quita was later hacked to death with a machete—Green was identified as the person who initiated and led the brutal assault. Richard was slashed and beaten but survived and later gave a description to police.
The Zebra murders, so named because of the police radio channel "Z" used in the case, involved random shootings and assaults, usually targeting white individuals, and carried out at close range with .32 caliber pistols. Over time, the attacks included elderly pedestrians, young professionals, teenagers, and even a dismembered, unidentified man (John Doe #169).
Green’s role in the Zebra Killings was exposed largely through the testimony of Anthony Harris, a former associate of the group who turned informant in exchange for immunity. Harris described Green’s involvement in the Hague case in graphic detail, including his use of a machete and how he took “credit” for the killing.
Green was arrested on May 1, 1974, along with Manuel Moore and J.C. Simon, following a high-profile citywide investigation. At the time of arrest, police discovered disturbing weapons caches at the Black Self-Help Center, including sickles, swords, axes, spears, and knives, believed to be used for ceremonial or planned executions.
During the trial, which began in March 1975 and lasted over a year, Harris' testimony, ballistic evidence, and eyewitness accounts painted a disturbing picture of organized murder, carried out under an ideology of racial hatred. Green was charged with one count of murder, two counts of kidnapping, two counts of robbery, and one count of assault with a deadly weapon.
On March 12, 1976, he was convicted and sentenced to life in prison. He reportedly laughed during the jury verdict, showing no remorse, as did some of his co-defendants.
Green remains incarcerated at California State Prison, Solano, and has been denied parole multiple times, most recently on July 31, 2024. He continues to serve a life sentence without the possibility of release in the near future.
