— Larry Allen Stout
Larry Allen Stout was born in 1963. He grew up in a difficult environment. His family faced many challenges, including financial problems. He did not have a father figure in his life and was raised primarily by his mother, Sylvia Stout. Stout's father was not known to him, and he was told he was of Indian descent.
When Stout was around four years old, he was placed in a foster home for a short time. This was due to conflict between him and his stepfather, Calvin Stout, who struggled with alcoholism. Calvin reportedly did not accept Larry because of his dark skin color, leading to problems in the household. This experience was filled with physical abuse, which was later confirmed by Larry's mother.
Stout's family moved around a lot during his childhood, following migrant work opportunities. This included traveling to states like California, Florida, Washington, Oregon, and Ohio. The constant movement made it hard for Stout to have a stable education. He started working at a young age to help support the family.
On February 17, 1987, Larry Allen Stout entered Trimble's Cleaners in Staunton, Virginia. The store owner, Jacqueline Kooshian, 40 years old, was alone at the time. Stout approached her under the pretense of picking up clothing. After gaining her trust, he attacked her from behind. He stabbed her deeply in the throat using a knife.
Kooshian suffered severe injuries, including the severing of vital arteries and airways. She was able to flee the store, but she bled to death shortly afterward. Stout took approximately $1,200 in cash from the store during the robbery. Witnesses later reported the attack and its violent nature, leading to a significant investigation.
Stout was soon apprehended due to evidence linking him to the crime. His girlfriend, Debra Littrell, was also implicated as she had waited nearby during the robbery. After a period of legal proceedings, Stout pleaded guilty to robbery and capital murder in connection with Kooshian's death.
On December 10, 1996, after being sentenced to death, Stout was executed by lethal injection in Virginia. In his final statement, he expressed remorse for his actions and apologized to Kooshian's family, hoping that his execution would provide closure for them.
