July 2, 1996Kyle David Sharp was born on August 27, 1970. He grew up in the United States. Information about his early life is limited, but we know he had a troubled upbringing. Details about his parents, childhood experiences, or education are not widely available.
On July 1, 1995, Kyle David Sharp murdered Judith A. Coughlin, a motel manager, at the Sands Motel in Wilcox, Cochise County, Arizona. The crime occurred after her nine-year-old son, Brandon Coughlin, became worried when he noticed his mother had not returned. He heard strange noises, including a woman screaming and a door slamming. Concerned, Brandon left the motel and went to a nearby Circle K store, where a clerk noticed him in distress and called the police.
When the police arrived at the motel, they found Judith's body on the bathroom floor of Sharp's room. She had been strangled to death. Authorities also discovered Kyle Sharp lying on the bed, fully clothed except for his shoes, pretending to be unconscious. The evidence revealed that Judith had suffered serious injuries during the attack. Her bone at the base of the tongue was fractured from the strangulation.
Kyle Sharp was arrested on the same day as the murder. He was charged with multiple crimes, and his trial began on June 25, 1996. On July 2, 1996, the jury found him guilty. The court sentenced him to death on April 7, 1997. The case highlighted the brutal nature of the crime, with specific circumstances that were labeled as especially heinous by the court. Sharp's defense noted some mitigating factors related to his personality, but they were not enough to change the final verdict. The Supreme Court of Arizona later published an opinion on the case in 1999.
