murder story

On April 17, 2006, Kevin Ray Underwood was arrested in connection with the disappearance of 10-year-old Jamie Rose Bolin. An Amber Alert had been issued for her, and authorities were searching for her actively. After his arrest, Underwood confessed to the FBI and Oklahoma detectives that he had murdered Bolin. He told them, "Go ahead and arrest me. She is in there. I chopped her up." Following this confession, police found her body hidden in a large plastic container in his bedroom closet.

The details surrounding Bolin's murder revealed Underwood's violent intentions. Police found evidence that included a wooden cutting board, which Underwood used to bludgeon Bolin to death. They also discovered meat tenderizer and barbecue skewers at the scene, which were believed to be intended for use on Bolin’s body after her death. Purcell Police Chief David Tompkins said that Underwood's actions reflected an elaborate fantasy involving kidnapping, torture, and cannibalism.

Underwood was tried and found guilty of first-degree murder on February 29, 2008. On March 7, 2008, the jury recommended the death penalty, and this sentence was confirmed by a district judge on April 3, 2008. Although Underwood tried to appeal his sentence, claiming it was unconstitutional due to his mental health issues, his appeal was rejected by a federal judge.

On July 1, 2022, Underwood was scheduled for execution, among other death row inmates in Oklahoma. His execution date was initially set for December 7, 2023 but was postponed following a request from the attorney general. As of now, he remains on death row while waiting for a new execution date.
