Bio

Kevin Miguel Stanford was born on August 23, 1963, in Louisville, Kentucky. He grew up not knowing his father. His upbringing was troubled and unstable. His mother was often involved with a local motorcycle club. This lifestyle exposed Kevin to neglect and violence from an early age. At just five years old, he was given his first shot of whiskey.

Kevin's mother did not take proper care of him. Instead, she moved him from relative to relative. Many of these relatives disciplined him harshly. At one point, he was beaten so badly with an extension cord that he still has scars to this day. He lived in an environment where he often lacked basic needs such as food, shelter, and medical care.

By the age of four, Kevin learned to barter for food by working at local restaurants. He faced many challenges growing up. At five years old, he was first molested by a babysitter, and this abuse continued for many months. As he grew older, he became a target for further abuse from neighborhood children.

In addition to sexual abuse, Kevin suffered physical abuse from his stepfather's nephew for over three years. This experience distorted his understanding of healthy relationships. To survive, he began to exchange sexual acts for drugs, money, and shelter. This pattern affected him throughout his early life.

As a teenager, Kevin turned to drugs and alcohol. By the age of twelve, he was regularly using alcohol and marijuana. His time in juvenile facilities introduced him to more dangerous drugs like LSD and amphetamines. Kevin even attempted suicide at one of these facilities but did not succeed.

Kevin's childhood was marked by instability and trauma. He scored differently on IQ tests over the years, struggling academically. Factors like abuse, neglect, and substance use likely contributed to low scores.

Murder Story

On January 7, 1981, Kevin Stanford, at the age of 17, committed a series of violent crimes in Jefferson County, Kentucky. He entered a Checker gasoline station, where he robbed the attendant, Baerbel Poore, who was 20 years old. During the robbery, Stanford assaulted Poore, subjecting her to repeated acts of rape and sodomy in the restroom of the gas station.

After the assault, Stanford took Poore to a secluded area not far from the gas station. There, he shot her twice—once in the face and once in the back of the head. Following these acts, he and an accomplice fled the scene. The robbery yielded a small amount of cash, cigarettes, and fuel.

Stanford's actions raised significant public concern and led to his arrest. He was later charged with murder, first-degree sodomy, and robbery. The case drew national attention due to Stanford's young age and the severe nature of the crimes. In 1982, he was sentenced to death for his actions.

However, due to his status as a juvenile at the time of the crime, efforts were made to challenge the death penalty imposed on him. Governor Paul Patton of Kentucky would eventually commute Stanford's death sentence to life in prison in December 2003. This decision reflected ongoing debates about the legality and morality of executing juvenile offenders in the United States.
