1987Kevin Lee Zimmerman was born on May 17, 1961. He grew up in Louisiana, where he had a troubled childhood. There are reports that he experienced issues such as child abuse, neglect, and abandonment. Throughout his youth, he faced various struggles that may have shaped his later behavior.
Zimmerman had a troubled past marked by several arrests. His first recorded arrest was in September 1979 for reckless operation of a vehicle. Over the years, he was charged with multiple offenses, including theft, forgery, drug possession, and violent acts such as battery. In January 1981, he was arrested for unauthorized use of a vehicle. He continued to get in trouble with the law, facing charges for criminal trespassing, carrying a concealed weapon, and assault.
Zimmerman also suffered from mental health issues. He had a significant head injury from a bicycle accident during his childhood, which resulted in a metallic plate being placed in his skull. This injury reportedly affected his behavior, which became increasingly erratic over time. Tests indicated that he experienced serious psychological issues, leading to confusion and signs of a deteriorating mental state.
In 1987, Zimmerman was living a chaotic life, often bouncing between legal troubles and personal crises. By this time, he was 26 years old and had accumulated a lengthy record of arrests. He was involved with various individuals who influenced his choices, leading him to a fateful encounter at a motel in Beaumont, Texas. His early life experiences and struggles laid a complex foundation for the events that followed.
On October 23, 1987, Kevin Lee Zimmerman, George Weber, and Kay Gonzales arrived at a Motel 6 in Beaumont, Texas. While at the motel, they met Leslie Gilbert Hooks, Jr., who was also staying there. The group had drinks together, and Leslie suggested they all go to the South Texas State Fair.
After returning from the fair, the night took a violent turn. Gonzales went to the bathroom in Zimmerman's room and heard a struggle coming from the adjacent bedroom. In that room, Zimmerman and Weber attacked Hooks. They stabbed him 31 times. After the attack, Zimmerman took Hooks' wallet and handed it to Weber. The trio then left the motel in their car to take Zimmerman to a hospital for treatment of a knife wound he had received during the altercation.
Law enforcement was called to the motel after Leslie's body was discovered the following morning by a hotel maid. Zimmerman was arrested shortly after he received medical treatment. While in custody, he wrote numerous letters to Weber and the district attorney, admitting he had stabbed Hooks for money.
During the trial, Gonzales testified that the argument between Zimmerman and Hooks began over an incident that had occurred at the fair. She stated that Zimmerman suddenly grabbed a knife and stabbed Hooks. Gonzales then left the room but returned to witness both Zimmerman and Weber continuing to stab Hooks, who was pleading for his life.
Ultimately, a jury convicted Zimmerman of capital murder, and he was sentenced to death. In 2004, he was executed by lethal injection in Texas.
