Bio

Kent William Sprouse was born on August 9, 1972, in Boone County, Missouri. He grew up in a small town and had a fairly typical childhood. As a young boy, he attended local schools and completed his education up to the 12th grade. After finishing school, he worked in various jobs, including as a welder and a laborer in construction.

Sprouse's life began to change as he entered adulthood. He struggled with substance abuse, particularly with methamphetamines. His drug use negatively affected his behavior and mental health. Reports from friends and family suggest that Sprouse started showing signs of mental illness in the early 2000s. Those close to him observed changes in his behavior, which included paranoia and mood swings. His mother became increasingly worried about his condition and even had him committed to a mental hospital for a short time.

In the months leading to his crimes, Sprouse's mental health continued to deteriorate. Friends and family described him as being paranoid and believed he heard voices. Despite the struggles he faced, he had no previous criminal record before his arrest on October 6, 2002. At the time of the incident, he was 30 years old and living in Ferris, Texas.

Murder Story

On October 6, 2002, Kent William Sprouse arrived at a gas station in Ferris, Texas. He was having car trouble and asked a customer for help. When the customer was unable to assist him, Sprouse shot Pedro Moreno, a Hispanic male filling his vehicle with gas. The shooting was reported to the police.

Officer Harry Marvin Steinfeldt III responded to the emergency call. Upon arriving at the scene, he saw Moreno on the ground. Just then, Sprouse shot Steinfeldt twice, resulting in the officer's death. Witnesses described Sprouse's demeanor as calm and emotionless during these events.

After the shooting, Sprouse suffered injuries when Steinfeldt returned fire. He was subsequently taken into custody by another officer. Both of his victims, Moreno and Steinfeldt, died from their wounds.

Sprouse was arrested on the same day, and it was determined that he had been under the influence of methamphetamine during the incident. He faced a trial for these actions and, on March 1, 2004, he was sentenced to death for the capital murder of Officer Steinfeldt. He was also charged with capital murder in the death of Pedro Moreno.
