— Kenneth Wayne Morris
Kenneth Wayne Morris was born on March 4, 1971, in Harris County, Texas. Official Texas prison records show that he was 20 years old when James Moody Adams was murdered on May 1, 1991. The same records list Morris as a laborer. They also show that he had completed nine years of school and later earned a GED.
Before the murder, Morris already had a criminal record. In February 1990, he received a 10-year sentence for burglary of a home. He was placed in a Texas boot camp program and was later returned to Harris County. On July 3, 1990, he was placed on probation.
Morris entered the justice system at a young age. During his capital murder trial, his defense presented information about his background, including testimony from his mother, mental health experts, and a criminologist. They spoke about conditions from his childhood and other factors that may have shaped his life. The jury heard this information during sentencing, but still decided that he should receive the death penalty.
In the early morning of May 1, 1991, Kenneth Wayne Morris and two accomplices broke into the Harris County, Texas home of James Moody Adams and his wife. Adams and his wife were asleep upstairs when the men kicked in the door. The intruders were looking for guns and money.
The noise woke Adams and his wife. Adams went to see what was happening, while his wife stayed in the bedroom. Morris found Adams inside the house and held him at gunpoint. One of the other men demanded guns and money. Adams said he did not have guns, but he offered to give them money.
The men forced their way into the bedroom. Adams’s wife hid in the closet because she could not safely escape. Adams gave Morris his wallet. When the men found no money inside it, Adams took money from a hidden part of the wallet and handed it over. Records say he gave Morris about $1,800. After taking the money, Morris shot Adams four times. Adams died in the bedroom near where his wife was hiding. His wife was not physically harmed.
After the shooting, Morris and his accomplices ran away. They left behind trash bags that they had brought to carry stolen items. Police found a fingerprint on one of the bags. The fingerprint led investigators to Christopher Montez, one of the accomplices. Montez was arrested and gave information that connected Morris to the crime. Police arrested Morris in Brenham, Texas, on May 13, 1991. After his arrest, Morris confessed both orally and in writing. Police also recovered the murder weapon, a .32-caliber revolver.
Morris was tried in Harris County in December 1993. A jury found him guilty of capital murder because James Adams was killed during a robbery. Morris was sentenced to death. His accomplices received different sentences: Christopher Montez received 85 years in prison, and Orlena Ayers received life in prison.
Morris appealed his conviction and death sentence, but the courts upheld them. In 2003, he received a temporary reprieve shortly before a scheduled execution while the courts reviewed another legal issue. That issue was later resolved, and his execution was rescheduled.
On March 4, 2009, Kenneth Wayne Morris was executed by lethal injection in Huntsville, Texas. The execution happened on his 38th birthday. Before he died, Morris apologized to James Adams’s family and asked for forgiveness. He was pronounced dead at 6:16 p.m.
