June 16, 2008Kelly Forbes was born in 1979 and is from Trinidad. She has also been referred to as Kelly Chadee-Forbes.
When she was 19 she said she was kidnapped and assaulted at gunpoint. A few years later she became pregnant with a daughter named Kadeshja. The child's father and she were not married, so she became a single parent.
When she was 24 she said she was raped. After that she moved to the United States to live with her brothers. She said she moved so her daughter would have a better life and more opportunity.
In the United States she worked at a beauty salon.
Kelly Forbes, born in 1979, was involved in the death of her husband, Michael Forbes, age 50. The death occurred on November 21, 2007, in Merrick, Nassau County, New York. She was arrested the same day.
Records and news reports list the method of death as strangulation with an electrical cord. The Nassau County medical examiner determined the cause of death was asphyxiation. Police found Michael Forbes unresponsive and he later died at a hospital.
Forbes was charged and tried for the killing. A jury convicted her of manslaughter, rejecting her claim of self-defense. News reports say she waited more than an hour to call 911 and that she sent a text message to a man saying, "No I did it."
The couple had been married about two months when the incident occurred. A young daughter of Forbes was reported to have been in the home that morning. Judge Jerald Carter sentenced Kelly Forbes to 21 years in prison on August 18, 2008.
