— Keith Steven Thurmond
Keith Steven Thurmond was born on October 31, 1959, in Fort Knox, Kentucky. His early years were spent in this military community before he moved to Texas. Very little is known about his family life or upbringing. He did not have a history of serious trouble with the law during his younger years.
As a young man, Keith worked as a master mechanic and an air conditioning technician. He also took on laborer jobs. His work experience showed that he had skills in practical and mechanical fields. He had a good education for someone who left school after the ninth grade.
At some point, Keith got married. He and his wife, Sharon Anne Thurmond, had a son together. Their relationship faced many challenges over the years, leading to their separation. Keith's struggles with his marriage seemed to affect his life deeply.
By 2001, Keith was living in Magnolia, Texas. His life was marked by personal issues and conflicts concerning child custody. He was known to have anger problems, which were evident in his reactions to stressful situations. Keith's life would take a dark turn in September 2001, leading to tragic events that changed everything.
On September 25, 2001, in Montgomery County, Texas, Keith Steven Thurmond committed a crime by shooting his estranged wife, Sharon Anne Thurmond, and her boyfriend, Guy Sean Fernandez. The incident took place in Magnolia. It was reported that Thurmond's 8-year-old son witnessed the murder.
According to the boy, he saw his father with a gun chasing his mother around the yard. He also mentioned that Fernandez ran into a mobile home during the chase. The boy then heard gunshots and ran to his father’s home across the street. After the shooting, Thurmond barricaded himself and his son inside their home. He later released the boy unharmed but stayed inside with at least one pistol.
Law enforcement officers tried to negotiate with Thurmond and, after a couple of hours, were able to get him to surrender peacefully. Thurmond was arrested on the same day as the murders.
In the aftermath of the crimes, Thurmond faced legal action. He was sentenced to death on November 14, 2002, for the murders. He spent nearly a decade on death row. During that time, he maintained his innocence, claiming he did not kill his wife.
Thurmond was executed by lethal injection on March 7, 2012. His final statement expressed his claim of innocence.
