— Kedisaletse Tsobane
Kedisaletse Tsobane was born in 1959. He grew up in Botswana. Information about his early life is limited. He eventually became a driver for the Francistown City Council. Tsobane faced various personal and financial challenges as an adult. His life took a difficult turn when his wife passed away in 2002.
After her death, Tsobane became responsible for their ten-year-old daughter, Kgotso Macfallen. Being a single parent came with its own set of difficulties. Tsobane struggled with financial problems. Reports suggest that he had issues with child maintenance payments. These struggles may have affected his relationship with his daughter.
On January 20, 2004, Tsobane was the last person seen with Kgotso. She was a standard six pupil at the time. The circumstances surrounding that day would later define his life in a tragic way. Tsobane's difficulties in life and his relationship with his daughter would have lasting consequences for both of them.
On January 20, 2004, Kedisaletse Tsobane killed his 10-year-old daughter, Kgotso Macfallen, in Francistown, Botswana. He was the last person seen with her as she was on her way to school. Later that day, police found Kgotso’s body in a bushy area with an electric cable around her neck, tied to a tree.
Tsobane admitted to the murder during his confession. He claimed that he wanted to avoid paying child maintenance and believed that killing Kgotso would relieve him of his financial burdens. After his arrest, Tsobane faced trial.
In November 2007, he was convicted and sentenced to death by hanging. The judge noted that Tsobane had not been honest regarding his intentions and that he had taken Kgotso to a secluded area to carry out the crime.
Tsobane appealed his conviction, arguing that he was intoxicated at the time and that the murder was not planned. However, in July 2008, the Court of Appeal rejected his appeal, stating that his intoxication claim was not credible. They also stated there were no mitigating circumstances in his case, as it was clear he had planned the murder.
On September 19, 2008, Kedisaletse Tsobane was executed by hanging. He became the 42nd person to be executed in Botswana since the country gained independence.
