May 21, 2003Kathleen Megan Folbigg was born on 14 June 1967. In 1969 her father, Thomas John Britton, killed her mother. After his arrest she became a ward of the state and was placed into foster care.
On 18 July 1970 she was moved into Bidura Children’s Home. In September 1970 she went to live with Mr and Mrs Marlborough, who provided foster care and later wanted to adopt her. While living with the Marlboroughs she was sometimes treated harshly and was not often allowed to spend time with friends.
She was not told about her mother’s death or that she had been a ward of the state until 1984. Until then she believed she had been adopted by the Marlboroughs.
Kathleen attended Kotara High School and completed her Trial Higher School Certificate. She left school as a teenager and worked at a number of low-paying jobs.
She met Craig Gibson Folbigg in 1985. They moved into a home in the Newcastle suburb of Mayfield in May 1987 and married in September 1987.
Kathleen Megan Folbigg was born on 14 June 1967. She was convicted of causing the deaths of her four infant children. Her classification is murderer, described as parricide. The stated motive remains unknown.
The four victims were Caleb Gibson (aged 19 days in 1989), Patrick Allen (about 8 months in 1991), Sarah Kathleen (about 10 months in 1993) and Laura Elizabeth (about 19 months in 1999). The deaths occurred in New South Wales, Australia, between 1989 and 1999.
The method recorded in the case was smothering. Folbigg was arrested on 19 April 2001. A jury found her guilty in 2003.
On 24 October 2003 she was sentenced to 40 years in prison with a non-parole period of 30 years. On appeal, her sentence was reduced on 17 February 2005 to 30 years with a non-parole period of 25 years. She is held in protective custody. Folbigg has maintained that the children died from natural causes.
