1979Karu Gene White was born on November 18, 1958. He grew up in Kentucky, but not much is publicly known about his early childhood or family life. Details about his upbringing are scarce.
As a child, Karu lived in a rural area, and like many kids in Kentucky, he likely experienced the struggles and joys of growing up in a close-knit community. However, information about his school life, relationships with friends, or interactions with family members is not readily available.
As he reached his teenage years, there is no documented account of any events that significantly shaped his character or behavior. His life seemed to follow a typical routine without notable incidents until he reached adulthood. By the time he was 18, he began to associate with questionable individuals, which eventually led him down a troubling path.
In the late 1970s, Karu’s life took a drastic turn. This was a period of significant change, leading to events that would alter the course of many lives, including his own. He became involved in criminal activities, which culminated in serious crimes later in his life.
Despite the moments of his early life being largely unknown, his later actions painted a stark picture of his character. His life story became widely discussed due to the severity of the crimes he committed.
On February 12, 1979, Karu Gene White and two accomplices entered a store in Haddix, Kentucky. The store was operated by three elderly individuals: Charles Gross, who was 75 years old, his wife Lola Gross, who was 74, and Sam Chaney, who was 79.
Inside the store, White and his accomplices brutally attacked the three elderly people. They used a wrench, a tire tool, and a tree limb to beat them to death. After killing them, the group took a billfold containing $7,000 in cash, coins, and a handgun.
Following the murders, White and his accomplices left the scene and hitchhiked to a friend's college dorm in Jackson, Kentucky. There, they divided the stolen money and items.
Karu Gene White was arrested on July 27, 1979. He was charged with the murders and later sentenced to death on March 29, 1980.
