Bio

Julian Kołtun was born in 1950 in Warsaw, Poland. According to Polish crime references, he spent part of his childhood in institutional care and was raised outside a stable family environment. As a young adult, Kołtun trained as a bookbinder before later working as a railroad laborer.

By 1980, Kołtun was living in eastern Poland and was approximately 30 years old. During this period, a series of violent sexual assaults against women occurred in rural communities near the Polish-Soviet border. The attacks created fear throughout the region and eventually led to the nickname "Wampir z Podlasia" ("The Podlaski Vampire"), which was later associated with Kołtun following his arrest.

His crimes, which involved the rape of multiple women and the murders of two victims, became one of the most notorious violent crime cases in Poland during the early 1980s. Following his arrest in January 1981, investigators linked him to a series of attacks that had terrorized communities across eastern Poland.

Murder Story

Julian Kołtun’s first widely reported known attack occurred on August 31, 1980. The victim was a Russian woman near the Polish-Soviet border. She survived the assault, and Kołtun was not immediately identified as the attacker.

Over the following months, more women were attacked in eastern Poland. The first fatal attack attributed to Kołtun occurred on September 17, 1980. Reports state that the victim was severely mutilated, and this led to the “vampire” nickname later attached to the case. Another woman was also killed during the same series of crimes.

Kołtun was accused of raping several women and killing two. Some accounts say he drank blood from victims, but because the available public sources are limited and often repeat secondary crime-encyclopedia material, this detail should be treated carefully unless supported by stronger court or archival documentation.

He was arrested in January 1981 after one surviving victim was able to resist him and provide information that helped police identify him. Polish references describe this survivor as a woman from Terespol who fought back during the attack and injured his face. Her testimony became important in the investigation.

After his arrest, Kołtun reportedly admitted his crimes during psychiatric and sexological examinations. His trial began in 1982. Some proceedings were closed to the public because of the forensic details. He was convicted of the murders and sexual assaults and was sentenced to death in August 1982.

Later Polish references state that Julian Kołtun was executed by hanging. However, the exact execution date is not clearly confirmed.
