On January 5, 2003, in Hidalgo County, Texas, Juan Raul Navarro-Ramirez and ten other members of the Tri-City Bombers gang entered a house intending to steal a significant amount of marijuana. This was part of a drug robbery.
During this incident, Navarro-Ramirez and his co-defendants shot and killed six Hispanic males. The victims were identified as Jimmy Edward Almendariz, Jerry Eugene Hidalgo, Ray Hidalgo, Juan Delgado Jr., Juan Delgado III, and Ruben Rolando Castillo. These individuals were all rival gang members.
The police discovered five bodies in and around one of the two houses on the property where the crime occurred. The attackers left one individual, Rosie Gutierrez, alive and tied up in a separate area of the house. She was the mother of two of the deceased victims.
Juan Delgado Villa was the only person to escape the shooting. He told the police that he had to dive out of a window to flee as shots were fired. His testimony became a significant part of the trial against Navarro-Ramirez.
Navarro-Ramirez was arrested on January 29, 2003, at his aunt's home. His trial began in December 2004, where he faced charges of capital murder. Prosecutors indicated they would seek the death penalty due to Navarro-Ramirez’s role in the crime, even though he was not identified as the one who fired the deadly shots. On December 23, 2004, he was sentenced to death for his involvement in the massacre.
