August 20, 1993Jozef Slovák was born on April 7, 1951, in a small village called Plavecký Štvrtok in Slovakia. Not much is known about his family background or childhood. As he grew up, he showed signs of above-average intelligence.
In 1982, he was sentenced to 15 years in prison for the murder of a young Yugoslavian woman. He began serving his sentence in Leopoldov Prison. His time in prison was shaped by a political change in Czechoslovakia. In March 1990, he was released on probation due to a wide-ranging amnesty granted by the newly elected President Václav Havel. This decision released many prisoners, including many who had committed serious crimes.
Jozef Slovák, known as "The Bratislava Strangler," is a Slovak serial killer. He is confirmed to have murdered at least five women from 1978 to 1991 in Slovakia and the Czech Republic. His first victim was a Yugoslavian woman named Blažica P. On August 22, 1978, he met her on a train and took her to the woods in Bratislava. When she refused his sexual advances, he strangled her. After the murder, he hid her body in the forest and discarded some of her belongings.
In 1982, Slovák was sentenced to 15 years in prison for this murder. He began serving his sentence but was released on probation in March 1990 due to an amnesty by the president of Czechoslovakia. Within months of his release, he killed again. His second victim, Monika Ondíková, was shot on July 4, 1990, in a park near Benešov. After shooting her, he bludgeoned her to death, robbed her, and hid her body in the forest.
Slovák committed more murders that followed. Vladislava Maříková was killed in late July 1990, and Diana Lopuchovská was murdered on June 26, 1991. His final victim was Anna Královičová, who he killed on July 16, 1991, also in Bratislava. After these murders, he was eventually arrested in July 1991. The police found evidence linking him to the crimes, including bruises from his last victim's defense.
On August 20, 1993, Slovák was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murders of Ondíková, Maříková, Lopuchovská, and Královičová. He continues to serve his sentence in Ilava prison in Slovakia.
