Bio

Joshua Maxwell was born on May 17, 1978, and was linked to Marion County, Indiana. Public records show he left school after the tenth grade and later worked as a laborer. He entered the juvenile justice system at a young age and accumulated multiple offenses, including theft, vehicle theft, resisting law enforcement, criminal mischief, disorderly conduct, and residential entry. These cases were followed by adult convictions for auto theft, firearm possession, criminal trespass, marijuana possession, and felony theft.

In 1997, Maxwell received prison sentences in Indiana for theft-related offenses. He was released on parole on March 3, 2000. Within months of his release, he became involved in new criminal activity with Tessie McFarland, the girlfriend who later became his co-defendant. Their cross-country crime spree in 2000 ended with two murders, his arrest, and eventual death sentence.

Murder Story

In September 2000, Joshua Maxwell and Tessie McFarland kidnapped Robbie Bott, a 45-year-old man from Indiana. They forced him to withdraw money from ATMs and purchase merchandise while also stealing property connected to him. On September 12, 2000, Bott’s burned vehicle was found abandoned with his bound body inside the trunk. The autopsy confirmed that he had been fatally shot. Maxwell was later convicted in Indiana of murder, criminal confinement, arson, and theft for the killing.

About one month later, Maxwell and McFarland traveled to San Antonio, Texas, where they targeted Rudolfo Lopes, a 45-year-old sergeant with the Bexar County Sheriff’s Department. On October 11, 2000, Lopes was robbed, kidnapped, and forced to surrender access to his bank account. He was then taken to a field behind a strip mall, blindfolded, bound, and shot once in the head with a 9 mm handgun. His body was discovered the next day. On October 17, 2000, Maxwell and McFarland were arrested after a police chase in San Francisco while driving Lopes’s stolen truck. Maxwell later confessed and was sentenced to death in Texas for Lopes’s murder.
