Bio

Joseph L. Trueblood was born on December 26, 1956. He grew up in a challenging environment, facing an abusive childhood. Details about his early life are limited, but it is known that he struggled with personal issues throughout his youth. He was described as having a mixed personality disorder and traumatic experiences that later influenced his mental health.

Trueblood worked as a taxi driver in Lafayette, Indiana. His life took a significant turn when he became involved with Susan Bowsher. They had a turbulent relationship, which ended when Susan expressed her intention to return to her ex-husband. This caused distress for Trueblood.

Leading up to the tragic events in 1988, Trueblood's emotional state appeared to be unstable. He felt rejected and betrayed, which ultimately led to a violent confrontation. It was reported that he had claimed to experience depression and had feelings of despair as the relationship deteriorated.

Trueblood had a twin brother who played a role in the aftermath of the events that took place on August 15, 1988. The brother testified against Trueblood in court, revealing that Trueblood confessed to him about what had happened. Trueblood's life ended in execution on June 12, 2003, but his early life story provides insight into the factors that would shape his later actions.

Murder Story

Joseph L. Trueblood committed multiple murders on August 15, 1988, in Tippecanoe County, Indiana. On that day, he picked up his ex-girlfriend, Susan Bowsher, along with her two young children, Ashelyn and William. While they were in the car, Trueblood shot Susan three times in the head and each child once in the head.

After the shootings, Trueblood drove to his twin brother's house, confessed to the murders, and borrowed a shovel. He then went to a secluded area where he buried the three victims in a shallow grave. Following the trial, Trueblood indicated that he wanted to plead guilty and did so. However, he later claimed that Susan had killed the children before taking her own life, and he sought to withdraw his guilty plea, which the court denied.

Trueblood was convicted of three counts of murder and received a death sentence. He was executed by lethal injection on June 12, 2003. Prior to his execution, he refused a special last meal and stated that he was protesting against the state's actions. Trueblood maintained his belief that he was innocent and asserted that his guilty plea was a result of his attorneys' advice to avoid the death penalty.
