murder story

José Vicente Matias committed some of Brazil’s most gruesome murders, raping, killing, and dismembering at least six women and girls between 1999 and 2005. His killings followed a ritualistic pattern, often involving extreme violence, sexual assault, dismemberment, and acts of cannibalism.

One of his first known victims was 15-year-old Natália Canhas Carneiro, whom he murdered in 1999 in Três Marias, Minas Gerais. He later claimed that she had stolen from him, which he used to justify his actions. In 2000, he targeted 26-year-old Simone Lima Pinho, an artisan and fellow traveler in Lençóis, Bahia. Her remains were found buried near a remote location, her body showing signs of ritualistic mutilation.

In April 2004, Matias killed 16-year-old Lidiayne Vieira de Melo in Goiânia, Goiás. He held her captive for more than a day, tortured her, and drank her blood before killing her and dismembering her body. The same year, he murdered 49-year-old German tourist Maryanne Kern, whose body was later found in Barreirinhas, Maranhão. Another victim, 29-year-old Russian-Israeli tourist Katryn Rakitov, disappeared in 2004 in Pirenópolis, Goiás. She had been traveling with a large sum of money ($15,000), which Matias allegedly stole. Her body was found months later, buried in a shallow grave.

One of his most infamous murders occurred in 2005, when he brutally killed 27-year-old Spanish tourist Nuria Fernandez Collada on Itatinga Beach, Alcântara, Maranhão. He beat her to death with a wooden club, dismembered her, and performed acts of cannibalism, consuming parts of her brain and drinking her blood in what he later described as a "spiritual ritual." Witnesses recalled seeing Matias performing a bizarre dance around her body after the murder.

For years, Matias eluded law enforcement due to his constant travel and use of different identities. However, after the high-profile murder of Collada, authorities intensified their efforts to capture him. He was finally arrested on March 29, 2005, in Bragança, Pará, following an anonymous tip.

During interrogations, Matias confessed to multiple murders, providing details that only the killer would know. He showed no remorse, instead describing his crimes as spiritual experiences. In court, he was sentenced to multiple prison terms for his crimes. In June 2008, he received 23 years for the murder of Lidiayne Vieira de Melo. In August 2016, he was sentenced to 24 years for the murder of Katryn Rakitov, and in May 2018, he was given 22 years and 4 months for the murder of Nuria Fernandez Collada. Currently, José Vicente Matias is serving his sentences at the Penitentiary Odenir Guimarães in the Aparecida de Goiânia prison complex.
