Bio

Jose Alfredo Rivera was born on December 23, 1962. It is known that he grew up in Matamoros, Mexico, which is located just across the border from Brownsville, Texas. As he grew older, Rivera moved to the United States, where he would eventually settle in Texas.

Throughout his life, Rivera faced challenges. His early years were troubled, and he had a history of run-ins with the law. By the late 1980s, he had been convicted of several crimes, including attempted burglary, making terroristic threats, and unlawfully carrying a weapon. His criminal record indicates a pattern of violent behavior and trouble with authority.

Rivera struggled with substance abuse and had multiple arrests related to intoxication. He had a tumultuous personal life, including a troubled marriage that led to a restraining order from his ex-wife due to domestic violence issues.

Murder Story

On July 9, 1993, in Brownsville, Texas, Jose Alfredo Rivera was involved in the murder of three-year-old Daniel Luis Blanco. Rivera's actions led to the death of the child in a tragic series of events. On that morning, Daniel's mother was home with her sons when Rivera was seen with Daniel. Rivera had befriended a neighbor, Veronica Zavala, who was also involved in the case.

Later that day, Daniel was reported missing after he was seen leaving with Zavala. His mother, Carolina Blanco, became worried after she could not find them and called the police. By the next day, Daniel's naked body was discovered floating in a small reservoir. An autopsy revealed that he did not drown; he had died from ligature strangulation. There were also signs that the child had been sexually assaulted.

Veronica Zavala confessed to being involved in the murder and implicated Rivera. Following her confession, Rivera made a videotaped confession in which he admitted to strangling Daniel and causing other harm. His confession included details that matched evidence found with the victim's body. Rivera was arrested a day after Daniel's body was found.

In 1994, Jose Alfredo Rivera was tried and convicted of capital murder. He received a death sentence for his crime. Over the years, he filed several appeals and requests for DNA testing related to his case. However, these were denied as the courts found his confessions credible and consistent with the evidence. Rivera maintained his innocence and alleged that his confession was coerced, but these claims were not accepted by the court.

In 2003, Rivera was scheduled to be executed, marking the conclusion of the legal processes surrounding his conviction and sentence.
