1986"I would like to tell the families of my victims that I am so sorry for what I have done. I wish I could bring back the loved ones I took from you. I really do. Paula, I am so sorry for taking your daughter's life. I know you hate me, and I don't blame you."
— Jonathan Wayne Nobles
Jonathan Wayne Nobles was born on August 27, 1961. Nobles spent a part of his early years in a foster home, where he experienced beatings and abuse.
At a young age, Nobles became involved with drugs and alcohol. He claimed that he started using drugs when he was just eight years old. By the time he reached his teenage years, he was using various substances, including methamphetamine and cocaine.
Nobles did not complete high school, he dropped out after the eighth grade. As a young adult, he worked in different jobs, including as an electrician and telemarketer. However, he often found himself in trouble with the law. He had previously been arrested and served time for theft, among other offenses.
On September 13, 1986, Jonathan Wayne Nobles committed two murders in Austin, Texas. He broke into a home where two young women, Mitzi Johnson-Nalley and Kelly Farquhar, were sleeping. Using a knife, he attacked them, stabbing them multiple times. During the attack, Ron Ross, who was Ms. Johnson-Nalley's boyfriend, intervened and was also stabbed multiple times but managed to survive.
After the murders, Nobles fled the scene but left a trail of blood behind. He later confessed to the police and provided information on where he had disposed of evidence from the crime, including the knife and bloody clothing. Nobles was arrested just six days after the murders and was charged with capital murder.
In 1987, he was convicted and sentenced to death. His trial included several confessions he made to police, which were crucial to the prosecution's case. Nobles did not testify during his trial, and his defense centered around a temporary insanity claim, suggesting that he had been heavily under the influence of drugs and alcohol at the time of the murders.
He spent over a decade on death row in Texas before his execution. On October 7, 1998, he was executed by lethal injection. In his last statement, he expressed sorrow for his actions, addressed the victims' families, and quoted a biblical passage about love. He was pronounced dead shortly after the lethal drugs were administered.
