Bio

Jonas Hoten Whitmore was born in 1944. Little is known about his early childhood and family life, but it is understood that he faced significant challenges growing up. He reported that he was sexually abused by both his mother and his aunt. These experiences were traumatic and likely influenced his later life.

In his adult years, Whitmore became a drifter, moving from place to place. He sometimes struggled to find stable work and housing. He often relied on the kindness of strangers for food and shelter. This lifestyle led him to various locations in the United States.

On August 14, 1986, Whitmore arrived in Mount Ida, Arkansas. He was looking for rental property and approached a local woman, Clara Stanley, to ask about available homes. After talking to her, he visited the home of 62-year-old Essie Mae Black. She welcomed him inside and even offered him milk and cookies.

During his time in Mrs. Black's home, Whitmore experienced a flashback to his childhood abuse. He later stated that seeing Mrs. Black reminded him of his mother, which triggered overwhelming emotions. These memories impacted his mental state at the time.

Following the incident with Mrs. Black, Whitmore left the area and continued his transient lifestyle. Eventually, he was arrested and charged with her murder. His trial brought attention to his troubled past and the circumstances surrounding his life choices.

Murder Story

On August 14, 1986, Jonas Hoten Whitmore entered the home of a 62-year-old woman named Essie Mae Black in Montgomery County, Arkansas. Whitmore, a drifter, had stopped to ask her about rental properties. Essie invited him in and even offered him milk and cookies. However, shortly after entering her home, Whitmore attacked her.

He stabbed Essie Black ten times, cutting her throat and carving an "X" into her cheek. After the attack, he stole $250 from her purse and a kitchen drawer before fleeing the scene. Witnesses later saw a vehicle matching the description of Whitmore’s leaving the area shortly after the murder occurred.

In the hours following the crime, Whitmore tried to dispose of evidence. He discarded his bloodstained clothing in a wooded area and attempted to clean the knife he had used. Investigators eventually found both his clothing and the knife, which had blood matching the victim's.

Whitmore was arrested and charged with capital murder. During his trial, he claimed that he had suffered a flashback of childhood abuse while at Essie's house. Despite his defense, he was found guilty and sentenced to death. The Arkansas Supreme Court affirmed his conviction.

After years of legal battles, Jonas Whitmore was executed by lethal injection on May 11, 1994. He was 50 years old at the time of his execution.
