1985Johnny Williamson was born on October 25, 1942. He grew up in Florida. His early life is not well-documented, but he eventually became involved in crime.
At some point, Johnny Williamson committed a robbery. This act led to his arrest and conviction. By 1984, he was serving a nine-year sentence for this robbery at the Cross City Correctional Institution in Dixie County, Florida.
While in prison, Williamson became involved in the sale and distribution of drugs. He formed connections with other inmates, including Omer Williamson, who was not related to him, and a man known as "Chickenhead" Robertson. The relationships he built in prison influenced his activities during his time there.
Williamson's life in prison was marked by conflict. He engaged in illegal activities and was known to interact with a range of inmates. This environment set the stage for later events in his life.
On June 20, 1985, Johnny Williamson committed murder at the Cross City Correctional Institution in Florida. He was involved in drug activities with another inmate, Omer Williamson, who owed $15 to Daniel Drew. Omer believed Drew was dishonest and chose not to pay him. Johnny suggested that they should kill Drew to prevent him from being a threat. Another inmate, “Chickenhead” Robertson, learned of their plan and offered to help find a weapon for the murder.
When they could not find a knife, Omer went to his cell and took a sharpened metal rod that Drew had previously made. Johnny, Omer, and Robertson then waited for Drew outside the maintenance shop. They asked another inmate to send Drew out to talk to them. When Drew arrived, Johnny gave him $5 and said he needed a knife to get the rest of the money owed.
Drew handed Johnny a knife he had made. At that moment, Johnny signaled Omer, who grabbed Drew from behind. Johnny then stabbed Drew, and a struggle began. Omer threw Drew to the ground and kicked him in the head. After a while, Omer lost his nerve and left, giving the metal rod to Johnny before going. Johnny continued to stab Drew multiple times.
After the murder, Johnny returned the knife to Robertson, who hid it under a tree. Johnny gave the metal rod back to Omer, who put it back in his cell. A grand jury indicted Johnny Williamson for First-Degree Murder and Possession of Contraband on October 22, 1985. He was found guilty and sentenced to death on May 8, 1986. Omer Williamson pleaded guilty and testified against Johnny and Robertson. Robertson was also tried and convicted for the possession charge.
