Bio

John Yancey Schmitt was born on July 15, 1973. He grew up in a suburban area, but information about his early life is limited. His family background, education, and experiences during childhood are not well-documented.

As a young adult, Schmitt had several run-ins with the law. He faced multiple drug-related charges and issues surrounding firearms. By the mid-1990s, he had convictions for offenses like possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and receiving stolen property. These convictions set a pattern for future legal trouble.

Before becoming involved in serious crimes, Schmitt was reportedly engaged in a lifestyle marked by drug use and small-time criminal activities. He had difficulty adhering to probation terms from earlier convictions, which included mandatory drug testing and meeting requirements. This lack of compliance led to warrants for his arrest prior to the events that would later define his criminal career.

In January 1999, Schmitt committed his first bank robbery. He used a sawed-off shotgun during this incident and, along with an accomplice, stole over $65,000. This crime was followed by a second robbery in February 1999, where he tragically shot and killed Earl Shelton Dunning, a security guard. Schmitt was heavily involved in criminal behavior during these years, which ultimately led to his capture and subsequent sentencing.

Murder Story

On February 17, 1999, John Yancey Schmitt entered the NationsBank in Bon Air, Chesterfield County, Virginia, wearing sunglasses and a bulky jacket. He attracted the attention of Earl Shelton Dunning, a 39-year-old security guard who had recently retired from the Army. Dunning followed Schmitt into the bank.

Inside, Schmitt shot Dunning twice without warning, then pointed his gun at the tellers and demanded money. Witnesses described the chaos as Schmitt threatened everyone in the bank, yelling that he would kill anyone who did not comply. He managed to flee the scene with approximately $36,000 in cash.

The bank's security cameras recorded Schmitt's actions during the robbery, capturing images of him holding a bag and a gun, but did not film the actual shooting. When emergency responders arrived, they found Dunning injured on the floor; he later died from his injuries.

Two days after the robbery, police tracked Schmitt to a hotel in Williamsburg, Virginia. They surrounded his room and negotiated for him to surrender. Upon his arrest, they discovered more than $27,000 in cash, a handgun, and various items of clothing. The gun used in the shooting was later matched to the bullets found in the bank and was determined to be the murder weapon based on evidence collected.

During the investigation, Schmitt claimed the shooting was accidental, stating it occurred during a struggle over his gun. However, the prosecution argued that the murder was premeditated, and a jury later agreed, leading to Schmitt's conviction for capital murder.

Subsequently, he was sentenced to death on August 15, 2000, for the killing of Earl Shelton Dunning. After years of appeals and legal proceedings, he was executed by lethal injection on November 9, 2006.
